# My essay is 200 words over the limit. How do I cut it without losing my argument?

Cut what repeats, not what proves: the opening line that announces the topic, a second example making the same point, restated thesis sentences and filler phrases. Then paste one paragraph at a time into HidenGPT's Rewrite on Simplify, which removes needless words and keeps your meaning. Shorten is for halving a text, not trimming it.

## How to do it in HidenGPT

- 01 Check your brief for what counts toward the limit (title, quotations, citations, reference list) and work out how many words you really need to cut.
- 02 Give each paragraph a cut budget: 200 words over six paragraphs is about 35 each, so no single section takes all the damage.
- 03 Cut by hand first: the sentence that announces what the essay will do, any recap paragraph and a second example that makes the same point as the first.
- 04 Paste one paragraph at a time into Rewrite on Simplify, then check that every citation, quotation and date is still there.
- 05 Read the whole essay once for flow and recount; run another paragraph only if you're still over.

## What to cut first

Start with sentences that don't carry the argument. The opening line that announces the topic (“This essay will discuss…”), a thesis restated at the start of every paragraph, a conclusion that summarizes each paragraph in order and a second example that proves the same point as the first are where the biggest cuts usually are.

Then trim inside sentences. Purdue OWL's Paramedic Method, based on Richard Lanham's Revising Prose, is a quick checklist: circle the prepositions, box the forms of “is”, ask where the action is, turn that action into a simple verb, move the doer into the subject, and cut slow wind-ups and redundancies. “In order to fully understand” becomes “To understand”; “it is important to first take into consideration the fact that” becomes “consider that”.

## What Rewrite does, and why it won't hit an exact number

Rewrite has two actions for length. Simplify splits long sentences and cuts jargon and needless words while keeping the meaning, which is what trimming needs. Shorten cuts a text to about half its length, keeping the main message and the critical information; that's for turning 1,000 words into 500, not for losing 200 from 1,200.

Neither takes a target word count, so run Simplify paragraph by paragraph and recount as you go. Rewrite is built to keep your facts, names and numbers and to add nothing new, but check quotations and citations after every pass and put back anything you need. It takes up to 20,000 characters at a time and keeps the language you wrote in.

## What not to cut

Your thesis, the evidence for it and the analysis that ties the two together are what the essay is graded on. Cutting an example is fine if another one makes the same point; cutting the sentence that explains why an example matters can cost you more than it saves.

Don't shrink the count by deleting citations, turning a quotation into an unattributed paraphrase or moving text into footnotes. Check your brief, or ask your teacher, whether footnotes, quotations and the reference list count toward the limit.

## Not the right tool if

- Trimming an essay you didn't write so you can hand it in as your own. Follow your school's rules on AI and disclose it wherever they ask.
- Hitting an exact word count automatically. Rewrite has no word target; you trim and recount.
- Cutting the reference list or footnotes to fit. Find out what counts toward the limit first.

## Other ways to do it

Cutting by hand with the Paramedic Method

Free, and you learn where your own wordy habits are. Slower on a long essay.

A friend or your school's writing center

Another reader spots the paragraph that repeats your argument faster than you can.

Your word processor's word count

Count each paragraph before you start and set a budget for it; it's slower than a tool but you decide every cut.

## Questions

### How do I cut 200 words from an essay?

Spread the cut: about 35 words from each of six paragraphs is easier than losing a whole section. Start with announcing sentences, recaps and duplicate examples, then trim wordy phrases inside sentences.

### How do I shorten an essay without losing content?

Cut repetition, not evidence. Restated theses, summary conclusions and filler such as “in order to” or “the fact that” can go; your claims, evidence and analysis stay.

### Can Rewrite cut my essay to an exact word count?

No. Simplify removes needless words and Shorten halves a text; neither takes a target, so trim paragraph by paragraph and recount.

### Will Simplify remove my citations?

It's built to keep facts, names and numbers and to add nothing new, so citations should stay. Check every citation and quotation after each pass anyway.

### Do quotes and citations count toward the word limit?

It depends on your class. Check the brief, and if it doesn't say, ask your teacher before you cut.

### What is the Paramedic Method?

A checklist for wordy sentences from Purdue OWL, based on Richard Lanham's Revising Prose. Find the prepositions and the forms of “is”, find the real action, make it the verb with the doer as the subject, then cut wind-ups and redundancies.

### Can I try it for free?

Yes. You can try 2 drafts a day on the homepage without an account; a plan adds saved history and your own voices.
