# I run a small shop and need Instagram captions that sound like us.

Bring the facts of the post: what it is, the price, your hours and one detail that belongs to your shop. HidenGPT's Instagram format, set to Local business, writes a caption with the hook inside the 125 characters Instagram shows before “more”, a close that asks for one thing and a few hashtags, and it never invents hours or prices.

Already wrote a caption? Paste it into the free AI cliché checker: it marks stock phrases like “we are thrilled to share”, flat rhythm and repeated openers, gives a 0-100 naturalness score and runs in your browser with no sign-up. It isn't an AI detector. [Does my writing sound like AI?](https://hidengpt.com/tools/ai-cliche-checker)

## How to do it in HidenGPT

- 01 Write down the facts of the post in the main box: what it is, the price, when and where, and one detail a competitor couldn't copy, such as the 6am cut or the 36-hour rise.
- 02 Pick Instagram caption under “Use it for”, open More details and set Account to Local business so hours and prices are stated only as you give them.
- 03 Choose the post type (single photo, carousel or Reel), a friendly or witty tone and a length: Short is about 150 characters, Medium 400-800 and Long 1,200-1,800.
- 04 Set the hashtag number to 3-5 and decide on the call to action; if you're on a plan, pick a voice built from captions you wrote yourself.
- 05 Read the first line alone, check every price, time and name against your shop, and paste the caption into Instagram with the photo.

## Fit the point into the first 125 characters

Instagram cuts a caption off after roughly 125 characters and shows “more”, so the first line is the only part everyone reads. HidenGPT's Instagram format puts the hook there and warns you when the first line runs past 150 characters, since it may not fit before the cut.

Here is what that looks like in a real shop. A first line that opens with a wind-up: “After a lot of thought and a very busy few weeks here at the shop, we are finally ready to tell you all that our spring peonies have arrived.” It is 141 characters long, and the cut lands inside the word “peonies”. A reader sees the wind-up and not the news.

The same news as a hook: “Peonies are in. We cut 60 stems at 6am and most will be gone by noon.” That is 69 characters, with the item, a number and a reason to act all visible before “more”. The rule of thumb: if you can delete the first sentence and the caption still makes sense, delete it.

Don't describe what the photo already shows. The picture says there are flowers in a bucket. The caption should say what the picture can't: the price, the time, the story, the deadline.

## Five facts to gather before you ask for a caption

A caption can only be as specific as the notes behind it. Spend two minutes on this list and the draft needs far less rewriting:

1. What it is, in the words a customer would use, not the name on your price list.
2. The price, or the range, exactly as it appears in the shop.
3. When and where: days, hours, address or neighbourhood, and whether you need to order ahead.
4. One number that is true: how many you made, how long it took, how many years you have done this.
5. The next step you want, and only one: message to reserve, save for later, tag a friend, come in before Saturday.

The Local business setting is built around the third item. If you give it hours, a location or prices, it states them clearly, and if you don't, it leaves them out rather than guessing. A missing detail shows up as a gap you can fill, not as a wrong opening time on a public post.

## A month of captions without repeating yourself

Most small accounts run out of things to say because every post is secretly the same post: here is a product, please buy it. A simple rotation fixes that. Sort your posts into four kinds and write one of each across a week or a fortnight, whatever pace you can actually hold:

- The item: what it is, the price, how to get it.
- The making: how it's made, a mistake, a number of test batches, the tools.
- The people: a customer story, a regular, the person who does the Saturday shift.
- The useful bit: how to care for it, how to choose, how to keep flowers fresh for a week.

A decision rule for the call to action: if your last two captions both asked for a sale, the next one asks for nothing but a save or a reply. Followers tolerate a lot of selling when it is mixed with things worth keeping.

Hashtags work the same way. Instagram recommends 3 to 5 and may limit posts to 5, so use a few that are specific to the post: your town, the product and one niche word, such as #peonyseason or #sourdoughsaturday, rather than a block of general tags like #love or #instagood. The format defaults to 5, lets you set 0, and warns you above 5.

## Keeping the same voice from post to post

Shops sound inconsistent when five different moods write five different captions: one jokey, one corporate, one copied from a supplier. A voice fixes that. Under Voices, paste 2-5 captions or messages you wrote yourself, at least 300 characters in all, and HidenGPT records your tone, how long your sentences run, the words you use and the ones you never would, and your habits with emoji and line breaks. Pick it when you write and each caption follows it. Voices need a plan: Pro saves up to 5 and Pro Max up to 20.

What you paste matters. Use posts you wrote yourself, a reply to a customer you were pleased with, or a note you put in a parcel. Leave out anything a tool or an agency wrote for you, or the voice learns their habits.

After the draft, a light red pen pass cuts stock phrases and flat rhythm and shows a naturalness score before and after. It is an editing score, not an AI detector. The last check is yours: read it aloud and change any sentence you wouldn't say across the counter.

## Not the right tool if

- Posting or scheduling. HidenGPT writes the caption text; you paste it into Instagram, add the photo or Reel and publish it yourself.
- Photos, graphics or video. The Instagram format writes captions and, for a carousel or Reel, a few cover text ideas of up to 6 words each; it doesn't make images.
- Claims you can't stand behind, such as results, certifications or health benefits. It works from the details you give it, so only include what you could say to a customer's face.

## Other ways to do it

Writing captions yourself from a running list

Costs nothing and sounds most like you. Keep a note on your phone of small things that happen in the shop and you will rarely face a blank box.

A freelance social media manager

Takes photos, plans the month and replies to comments. Worth it if you have the budget and don't want to touch the account.

ChatGPT or another chatbot, with your old captions pasted in

Quick for a one-off post; expect to cut stock openers and extra hashtags, and check any hours or prices it adds.

## Questions

### How do I write good Instagram captions for my small business?

Put the point in the first 125 characters, give one real detail, and end with one thing to do. Use the five facts above (what it is, price, when and where, one true number, the next step) and cut any sentence that could appear in any other shop's caption.

### How long should an Instagram caption be?

As long as the post needs, up to Instagram's 2,200-character limit. For a product post, 400-800 characters is usually plenty; HidenGPT's Short setting is about 150 characters, Medium 400-800 and Long 1,200-1,800, and it checks every caption against the limit.

### How many hashtags should I use?

Three to five specific ones. Instagram recommends 3-5 and may limit posts to 5, and HidenGPT warns you above 5 and flags more than 30, which Instagram doesn't allow.

### What do I post when nothing is happening in the shop?

Post the making, the people or something useful. A behind-the-scenes caption about how an item is made, a regular customer's story or a care tip needs no news, and it keeps your feed from being all sales posts.

### Will it invent my opening hours or prices?

It's built not to. With Account set to Local business, it states a location, hours or prices clearly if you gave them and leaves them out if you didn't. Check every time, price and name against your shop before you post.

### Can it write captions for Reels and carousels?

Yes. Choose Carousel or Reel as the post type. A carousel caption builds curiosity and asks people to swipe instead of repeating the slides, and you can switch on Cover text ideas to get three short options of up to 6 words each.

### Will my followers be able to tell a caption was written by AI?

They notice stock openers like “we are thrilled to share” and captions with no detail only you would know, so fix those first. HidenGPT makes no promise about how any reader or tool will judge a post; the answer is to start from real details and a voice built from your own words.

### Can I try it before I subscribe?

You can try 2 drafts a day on the homepage without an account. Writing in the studio, with history and your own voice, needs a plan; Pro is $19 a month with a $3 first month.
