# I'm giving my two weeks' notice and need a simple letter I can hand in or email today.

Bring your manager's name, your job title and your last day, two weeks after you hand it in. HidenGPT's Career format, set to Resignation letter, drafts a short notice that states the date, offers help covering your work and says thanks. Two weeks is a common US courtesy; your contract or handbook may ask for something else.

## How to do it in HidenGPT

- 01 Look up the notice your contract, handbook or union agreement asks for, then count forward from the day you will hand the letter in to find your last day.
- 02 Pick Career under “Use it for”, set the type to Resignation letter and choose Warm but professional, which suits most jobs you are leaving on good terms.
- 03 In the main box, give your manager's name, your role, the day you hand it in, your last day or last shift, and one or two things you will finish or pass on.
- 04 Check both dates against a calendar and your rota, and if you are emailing it, add a subject line such as “Two weeks' notice: Ana Ruiz”.
- 05 Say it to your manager before the letter reaches them, at the start of a shift or on a short call, then hand it over or send it and keep a copy.

## How to count the two weeks

Two weeks' notice is a span of time, and the letter turns it into one date. Workplaces count it a little differently, so the safest letter names the exact last day and nobody has to do arithmetic.

A common pattern for a Monday-to-Friday job, using October 2026:

- Hand it in on Monday, October 12: last day Friday, October 23. That is ten working days, counting the Monday.
- Hand it in on Friday, October 16: last day Friday, October 30, because the notice starts with the next working week.
- Hand it in on Wednesday, October 14: last day Tuesday, October 27, or Wednesday, October 28 if your employer counts from the following day. Ask.

For shift work, count calendar days. Handing it in on Monday, October 12 means the two weeks run through Sunday, October 25, and your last day is your last scheduled shift inside that window, for example Saturday, October 24. If the rota for the second week isn't out yet, write the end date and say you will work the shifts you are given until then.

Three things change the count: booked vacation inside the two weeks, a public holiday, and a contract or handbook that asks for more than two weeks. For the first two, ask HR how they are treated. For the third, the contract wins; two weeks is a custom, not a number that overrides what you signed.

## Three versions: short, shift job and email

The short one, for an office:

“Dear Mr. Patel,

Please accept this letter as my two weeks' notice. My last day at Hollis & Grant will be Friday, October 23.

Before I go, I'll hand over my open client files to Dana. Thank you for the last three years.

Ana Ruiz”

For a store, restaurant or warehouse, where the rota, keys and uniform matter more than files:

“Hi Carla,

I'm giving my two weeks' notice. My last shift will be Saturday, October 24, and I'll work my scheduled shifts until then.

I can finish the November schedule draft and train Jess on opening and closing. I'll return my keys and apron on my last shift.

Thanks for being flexible with my hours this year.

Sam Okoro”

By email, the body can stay the same as the short version; the subject line does the filing. “Two weeks' notice: Ana Ruiz” or “Resignation, last day October 23” are easy to find later. Send it to your manager, and copy HR if that is how resignations go where you work. On paper, put the date at the top and sign above your typed name.

## The new job, a counteroffer and what to cut

A two weeks' notice letter can carry one neutral line about what comes next, such as “I've accepted a position with another company”. It is optional. The Career format leaves reasons out of a resignation by default, so if you want that line, add it yourself or ask for it once the draft appears: “Add one sentence saying I've accepted a role elsewhere.” Leave out the new employer's name if you would rather not share it, and leave out the new pay and title.

Decide about a counteroffer before you hand the letter in. If no offer would change your mind, one sentence is enough when it comes: “Thank you, I appreciate it, but I've made my decision.” If an offer might change your mind, have that conversation before you give notice, not after.

Cut these from the letter:

- “Effective immediately”, when you mean two weeks. It says the opposite.
- A date without a weekday. “The 23rd” invites a question; “Friday, October 23” doesn't.
- “Call me any time after I leave, whatever you need”, unless you mean it.
- Feedback about managers, pay or policy. If your employer holds an exit interview, that is the place, and you choose how much to say.
- An apology for the timing. Giving two weeks is already the considerate version.

## What to settle during your two weeks

The letter is the easy part; the two weeks are where loose ends pile up. A checklist, roughly in order:

- Day one: agree with your manager what gets handed over and to whom, and write it down.
- First week: ask HR when your final paycheck comes, what happens to unused vacation, when your health coverage ends and what to do about any retirement account. The answers depend on your employer and where you work, so get them in writing.
- First week: write a handover note with open tasks, accounts that belong to the role rather than to you, key contacts and where the files live.
- Second week: train the person covering for you, and introduce them to clients or regulars if that is part of the job.
- Before the last day: make sure HR has your home address for tax forms and a personal email for anything that comes later.
- Last day: return keys, badge, laptop, uniform or anything else you signed for, and ask for a note saying you did.
- Last day, if you like: a short goodbye message to colleagues with a personal email or a LinkedIn link.

If your employer tells you not to work the two weeks, that is their call. Ask HR in writing what you will be paid and when, and return everything you were given either way.

## Not the right tool if

- A resignation tied to a complaint, an injury or unpaid wages. Get advice from HR, a union representative or an employment lawyer before anything goes in writing.
- A contract with a longer notice period or a required form. Follow the contract and treat the draft as wording to adapt.
- Quitting without notice. This page is about giving notice; if you have to leave sooner, ask HR what that means for your final pay.

## Other ways to do it

Your employer's resignation form or HR system

Some companies take resignations only through their own form. Use it, and keep a screenshot or a copy.

A handwritten note

For many shift jobs, three signed and dated sentences are enough: two weeks' notice, your last shift, thanks.

Copy one and change the names and dates. They are short on purpose.

ChatGPT or another chatbot

Quick, but expect a longer letter with a made-up reason and lines like “it has been an honor and a privilege” that you will want to cut.

## Questions

### What do I write in a two weeks' notice letter?

That you are giving notice, your last working day and thanks, plus a line about the handover if you mean it. Three or four sentences are enough; the samples on this page run about 40 to 60 words.

### Is two weeks' notice required?

It depends on your contract, your employer's policy and where you work. In the US two weeks is a common courtesy rather than a rule that fits every job, so check your contract or handbook, or ask HR, before you pick the date.

### How do I count two weeks' notice?

Count from the day you hand it in: for a Monday-to-Friday job, handing it in on a Monday usually means finishing on the Friday of the following week. For shift work, your last day is your last scheduled shift within the 14 days; when in doubt, ask HR and write the exact date.

### Should I give two weeks' notice by email or in person?

Tell your manager in person or on a call first, then follow with the letter or email, unless your handbook says otherwise. An email also gives you a dated record without any extra effort.

### What subject line should a two weeks' notice email have?

Plain and searchable: your name and the fact that it is your notice, such as “Two weeks' notice: Ana Ruiz” or “Resignation, last day October 23”. Your manager and HR will need to find it later.

### What if my employer asks me to leave before the two weeks are up?

That is the employer's decision, and what you are paid for the remaining days depends on your contract, the employer's policy and local rules. Ask HR in writing, and return company property either way.

### What does HidenGPT write for a two weeks' notice?

A short letter with the decision, your last working day, an offer to help with the handover and thanks, with no reasons or complaints. If you leave out the date it puts in a [date] placeholder, and the handover offer comes only from what you tell it.

### Can I try it before I pay?

Yes. The homepage allows 2 drafts a day without an account, so you can draft the letter and a shorter version. Saved history and voices built from your own writing need a plan; Pro's first month costs $3.
