I sell on Etsy and all my listing descriptions sound the same.
Write each description from facts only that item has: what it is in a buyer's words, then size, materials, care and how you make it. HidenGPT's Product description format, set to Etsy, turns those details into a title within 140 characters, feature bullets, a description and up to 13 tags, using only what you give it.
Already wrote your listings? Paste a description into the free AI cliché checker: it marks stock phrases such as “elevate” and “game-changer”, gives a 0-100 naturalness score and runs in your browser with no sign-up. It isn't an AI detector. Does my writing sound like AI?

How to do it in HidenGPT
- 01
Before you write, list what only this item has: its size or weight, materials, colors, how you make it, how to care for it and who usually buys it.
- 02
Pick Product description under “Use it for” (in More), set Platform to Etsy and paste those details into the main box.
- 03
Add the words buyers type into Etsy search under Keywords, say who it's for under Customer and pick a Tone: Persuasive, Premium, Plain & clear or Friendly.
- 04
If you're on a plan, pick a voice built from two or three listings you wrote yourself, so every item sounds like your shop.
- 05
Check the title and tags in the rule check, read every line against the real item, then download the plain-text version and paste each part into Etsy's listing form.
Product Description: Titles, bullets and descriptions for Shopify, Amazon, Etsy and eBay.
Why every listing ends up sounding the same
Generic copy fits any product, so it fits all of yours: “Elevate your space with our handcrafted soy candle”, “the perfect addition to any home”, “a symphony of soothing scents”, “a game-changer”. Swap the product name and the sentence still works, which is why a shop of twenty listings starts to read like one listing twenty times.
Etsy's own advice points the other way. Its listing help says to state clearly what the item is and its key details, and to keep subjective words like “perfect” out of the title. Its Seller Handbook asks for a sentence or two that works in your top keywords in a way that sounds human and like your brand, and suggests that solo makers write in the first person. Keep the voice the same across the shop and change the facts: the size, the scent, the material, the reason you made it.
A description template built from Etsy's guidance
Etsy's Seller Handbook suggests putting essential information such as sizes, dimensions, colors and ordering directions at the top, using bullet points or short paragraphs, and ending with the product's story. Its SEO help page adds that a person should know exactly what you're selling from the first sentence.
Put together, that gives an order you can reuse for every listing: a first sentence that names the item in the words a buyer would search for; the details buyers scan for, such as size, materials, colors and what's included; personalization or ordering instructions; care; two or three sentences on how and why you make it; and a link to a matching listing or shop section, since Etsy says pasted Etsy URLs work as links in descriptions.
Keywords belong here too. The handbook says Etsy search considers the keywords and phrases in your description when ranking listings, so work the main ones into the first few sentences. Don't copy the title word for word or paste in a list of keywords.
Titles and tags: Etsy's limits
A title can be up to 140 characters, but Etsy suggests fewer than 15 words: name the item plainly, put the most important traits such as color, material and size up front, and move words like “beautiful” to the description. Shoppers only see the first few words of a title in search results. Leave out price, shipping and sales; Etsy badges those itself.
Each listing takes up to 13 tags of up to 20 characters, using letters, numbers and spaces, with apostrophes and hyphens allowed inside words. Etsy's handbook recommends using all 13, as multi-word phrases a person would actually type, and notes that a phrase already in your attributes doesn't need its own tag.
What the Product description format does with Etsy
With Platform set to Etsy, the title stays within 140 characters and starts with what the item is in plain search words, then key details such as material, size or occasion, with no strings of keywords. Then come feature bullets that say what each feature does for the buyer (5 by default, 3-10 under More details), a description of 2-4 short paragraphs on use, benefit and care, a specs table and up to 13 tags. You'll see a warning if there are more than 13 tags, if a tag runs over 20 characters or if words like “sale” or “free shipping” land in the title. It also adds an SEO title and meta description, which Etsy's listing form doesn't ask for.
It uses only the details you give it: no certifications, warranties, health claims or “100%” statements you didn't provide, and no competitor brands. Product descriptions skip the red pen because the output is structured, but every draft is written against a list of stock phrases to avoid, “elevate” and “game-changer” among them. On Pro or Pro Max, a voice built from your own writing (at least 300 characters; 2-5 pieces works best) keeps every listing in your shop's voice. Download the plain-text version to paste it without Markdown marks.
Not the right tool if
- Rewording another shop's listing. Write from your own item; the draft is built only from the details you give it.
- Claims you can't back up, such as a certification or a health benefit. It won't add them on its own; only include what you can prove.
- A whole shop in one go. Each request writes one listing, so paste one item at a time.
Other ways to do it
- Etsy's Seller Handbook and listing help
- Free, current and the source for Etsy's own limits and search advice. You still write every listing yourself.
- Etsy's AI title suggestions
- Built into Etsy's search visibility dashboard for eligible English listings. It suggests titles only, not descriptions or tags.
- Your own template, filled in by hand
- Free and fully in your voice. Slower across a big shop, and it's easy to slip back into the same sentences.
- ChatGPT or another chatbot
- Quick drafts, but expect lines like “elevate your space” and check every detail against the item.
Questions
How do I write an Etsy listing description?
Start with one sentence that says exactly what the item is, then give the details buyers look for: size, materials, colors, personalization and care. Finish with how you make it and a link to a related listing, in short paragraphs or bullet points as Etsy's Seller Handbook suggests.
Is there a template for Etsy listing descriptions?
Yes, a simple order works for most items: what it is, the essential details, ordering and care, your story, then a link. Keep the order for every listing and change the facts, so each one says something only that item can.
What's the character limit for an Etsy listing description?
Etsy's listing help gives limits for titles and tags, not for descriptions; its advice is to keep descriptions short and informative, with the essentials at the top. Titles can be up to 140 characters, and each listing takes up to 13 tags of 20 characters each.
Does Etsy use the description for SEO?
Yes. Etsy's Seller Handbook says Etsy search considers keywords and phrases in your description when ranking listings, and its help page notes that search engines like Google read the whole page. Put your main keywords in the first few sentences without repeating them.
How should I format an Etsy description?
Use short paragraphs and bullet points, with the most important details first; that's what Etsy's Seller Handbook recommends. Pasted Etsy URLs work as links, so you can end with a link to a matching item or shop section.
Will it make up details about my product?
It's built not to. It uses only the details you give it and adds no certifications, warranties, health claims or “100%” statements you didn't provide; check every line against the item before you publish.
Can I try it for free?
Yes. You can try 2 drafts a day on the homepage without an account. Saving drafts and writing in your own voice need a plan; Pro is $3 for the first month.
