My Shopify product descriptions are just the supplier's text, and I want my own.
Paste the supplier's specs plus what you know from handling the product: who buys it, what surprised you, how to look after it. HidenGPT's Product description format, set to Shopify, writes a title within 70 characters, feature bullets, a short description, a specs table and the SEO title and meta description from those facts alone.

How to do it in HidenGPT
- 01
Put the supplier's text in a note and add what nobody else selling this item knows: the measurements you took, what it's like to use, what customers ask you about it and how to care for it.
- 02
Pick Product description under “Use it for” (in More); Platform starts on Shopify, so paste your note into the main box and put the words shoppers search with under Keywords.
- 03
Say who buys it under Customer and pick a Tone: Plain & clear suits tools and kitchen goods, Premium suits gifts at a higher price, and More details sets anywhere from 3 to 10 bullets.
- 04
Look at the rule check for the title and SEO lengths, then hold every bullet and spec up against the real product and delete what you can't stand behind.
- 05
Download the HTML version if your description editor has an HTML view, or plain text if it doesn't, and put the SEO title and meta description into the product's Search engine listing section.
Product Description: Titles, bullets and descriptions for Shopify, Amazon, Etsy and eBay.
Why the supplier's description works against you
Supplier copy is written once for every shop that stocks the item, so it can't say anything about yours. Shopify's own SEO help tells merchants not to copy text a manufacturer provides, because the same description may already be on other websites. Its guide to writing descriptions adds that a vague line such as “excellent product quality” tells a customer nothing and can make them doubt you when there's no evidence behind it.
So split the supplier sheet in two. Keep the numbers: size, weight, materials, compatibility. Throw away the adjectives: premium, high quality, perfect for all your needs. Then add three kinds of fact that no other store has: what you measured yourself, what the product is like in use, and the question customers keep asking you. In the skillet example, the honest note that eggs stick for the first couple of weeks answers a worry before it turns into a return.
What shoppers scan for, with before and after lines
Shopify's help suggests a description cover specifications such as size, material and weight, suggested uses, benefits with evidence and a short story, and its writing guide asks for bullet points, white space and headings so the page can be scanned. A shopper's eye goes from the title and photos to the bullets and specs: how big, how heavy, what it's made of, whether it fits their stove or shelf, what's in the box and how to look after it. The paragraph underneath is for the story and the reassurance.
Before: “Premium cast iron skillet, perfect for all your cooking needs.” After: “10.25-inch cast iron skillet, 2 in deep and 5.3 lb, with two pour spouts and a helper handle.”
Before: “Oven safe, works on all stovetops.” After: “Works on gas, electric and induction, and over a campfire.”
Before: “Comes pre-seasoned and ready to cook.” After: “Pre-seasoned with soybean oil. Eggs may stick for the first couple of weeks while the seasoning builds up.”
Every after line is something a shopper could check with a tape measure or a pan of eggs.
Shopify's title, SEO and length guidance
Shopify turns the product title into the page's H1 heading, so the main search words belong there. In the Search engine listing section, the page title field takes up to 70 characters, and Shopify suggests keeping it to about 60 so search results don't shorten it; for the meta description it recommends about 160 characters, written as readable phrases rather than a list of keywords. The same help page asks for at least 250 words of descriptive text on every page.
With Platform on Shopify, the format keeps the product title within 70 characters, warns when the SEO title runs past 70 or the meta description past 160, and writes 5 bullets unless you change it. If you want the 60-character SEO title Shopify suggests, say so in your details. Then count the words on the finished page. If it falls short of 250, add facts such as sizing notes, what's in the box or how it's made, not more adjectives.
What to cut before you publish
Go through the draft once with this list.
1. Supplier adjectives: premium, high quality, top grade, perfect for all your needs. 2. Claims you can't prove, such as “lasts a lifetime” or “non-toxic”. Shopify's guide says claims must be factual; tone them down or back them up. 3. A first line that repeats the title word for word. 4. A block of keywords at the bottom. Use the words once each, where they read naturally. 5. Lines that fit any product, such as “elevate your cooking” or “a must-have for every kitchen”. 6. Anything you'd have to ask the supplier about, like a temperature limit you were never given. Leave it out until you know.
The format is built not to add certifications, warranties, health claims, “100%” statements or competitor names you didn't give it. Product descriptions skip the red pen because the output is a set of fixed fields, but each draft is written against the same list of stock phrases to avoid.
Not the right tool if
- Copying a competitor's product page. Start from your own product and your own notes; the draft is built from the facts you paste.
- Importing a whole catalog in one go. Each request writes one product page, so work through your range one item at a time.
- Health, safety or certification claims you can't document. It won't invent them, and they shouldn't go on the page without paperwork.
Other ways to do it
- Sidekick in your Shopify admin
- Shopify says Sidekick can write and edit product descriptions from details such as the product title and keywords, right in the editor. Shopify also advises reviewing anything an AI tool writes.
- Shopify Help Center's description guide
- Shopify's own advice on specific, scannable descriptions and evidence for claims. No cost, but you write every page yourself.
- A freelance copywriter
- Worth it for a short range of expensive products where each page has to earn its keep. Slower and costlier across a large catalog.
- ChatGPT or another chatbot
- Quick first drafts. Expect the supplier's adjectives to creep back in, and check every spec against the product.
Questions
How do I write a product description for Shopify?
Lead with the facts a shopper needs to decide, in bullets: size, material, weight, what it fits or works with, what's in the box and care. Add a short paragraph on use with one detail that comes from your own experience, then fill in the SEO title and meta description.
Is there a character limit for Shopify product descriptions?
Shopify's SEO help gives limits for the search listing rather than the description: up to 70 characters for the page title, with about 60 suggested, and about 160 recommended for the meta description. For the description, it asks for at least 250 words of descriptive text per page.
Can I use the manufacturer's description on my Shopify store?
You can, but Shopify's SEO help advises against copying manufacturer text, because the same words may already be on other websites. Keep the specifications and rewrite everything else from what you know about the product.
How long should a Shopify product description be?
Shopify's SEO help suggests at least 250 words of descriptive text on each page, counting everything a shopper reads. Get there with facts like sizing notes, care and what's included, never with filler.
Will it make up features my product doesn't have?
It's built not to: it works from the details you paste and adds no certifications, warranties, health claims or “100%” lines you didn't supply. Still compare every bullet with the product before you publish.
Can I paste the result straight into Shopify?
Yes. Download HTML if your description editor has an HTML view, or plain text without Markdown marks if it doesn't. The SEO title and meta description go into the product's Search engine listing fields.
Can I try it before paying?
Yes. Visitors get 2 drafts a day on the homepage without signing up. Saving drafts and writing in your own voice need a plan; Pro is $3 for the first month, then $19 a month.
