I need a cover letter that sounds like me, not like ChatGPT wrote it.

Bring the job posting, your resume and two real results, with numbers if you have them. HidenGPT's Career format writes a 250-350-word cover letter that opens on why this company, matches two of your results to the posting and asks for an interview, with no stock openers. A voice built from your writing keeps it sounding like you.

Use it for

How to do it in HidenGPT

  1. 01

Paste the job posting somewhere you can see it and underline the three things it asks for most.

  2. 02

Pick Career under “Use it for”, set the type to Cover letter, add the target role and paste the posting into its own field.

  3. 03

In the main box, write two results that answer the posting, with numbers where you have them; a missing number comes back as a placeholder like [X%] for you to fill, never an invented one.

  4. 04

If you're on a plan, pick a voice built from a few things you wrote, so the letter follows your sentence length and word choice.

  5. 05

Read the draft aloud, replace any sentence you wouldn't say in an interview and check every claim against your resume.

Career (Resume, Cover Letter, LinkedIn): Resume summaries, bullet points, cover letters and your LinkedIn profile.

What makes a cover letter read as generated

Generated letters lean on the same lines: “I am excited to apply for the position of…”, “I am a hard-working team player”, “I believe I would be a great fit”. Add a summary of the resume the reader already has and adjectives with no evidence behind them, and the letter could have been sent by anyone to any company.

Career offices give the opposite advice. Yale's Office of Career Strategy says each letter should be tailored to a specific job and kept to one page; USC's career center says to tie your experience directly to the job description. A letter that names this company, this role and two things you actually did reads like a person wrote it for this job.

What the Career format does

Pick Career and set the type to Cover letter. The draft is 250-350 words: a first paragraph specific to the company and the role, two concrete achievements in the middle that answer the needs in the posting, and a clear request for an interview at the end. Openers like “I am excited to apply for this position” are ruled out, and so are unproven clichés like “team player” and “hard-working”. If you paste the posting, its key skills are worked in naturally, which helps with applicant tracking systems, without copying it.

It uses only what you give it. A number you didn't provide comes back as a placeholder such as [X%], not a made-up figure. You'll see a warning if the letter comes in under 200 or over 420 words, and the red pen runs a light pass over stock phrases.

Making it sound like you

A voice is a style profile built from your own writing: at least 300 characters, and 2-5 pieces works best. An old cover letter, a long email you were happy with or a personal statement all work. On Pro or Pro Max, pick that voice in the composer and the letter follows your tone, sentence length and word choice.

Without a voice, the Tone setting helps: Professional, Warm but professional or Confident. Either way, the last pass is yours. Read it aloud, cut anything you wouldn't say across a table, and keep it to one page and three or four paragraphs, which is what Yale's and USC's career offices recommend.

Not the right tool if

  • Inventing experience. The letter is built only from what you give it, and a claim you can't back up will come apart in the interview.
  • Resume layout or design. Career writes the text; formatting happens in your own document.
  • An employer that asks you not to use AI in your application. Follow their instructions.

Other ways to do it

Your campus career center
Free feedback from a person who reads cover letters often. Slower, but they know what local employers expect.
Grammarly or a spell checker on your own draft
Good for typos and grammar in a letter you wrote yourself.
ChatGPT or another chatbot
Quick drafts, but expect stock openers and generic praise you'll need to rewrite.

Questions

How do I write a cover letter that doesn't sound like AI?

Name the company and the role in the first lines, give two specific results that answer the posting and ask for an interview. Cut stock openers like “I am excited to apply” and adjectives you can't back up.

How long should a cover letter be?

One page at most, usually three to four paragraphs; that's what Yale's and USC's career offices recommend. HidenGPT's Career format aims for 250-350 words.

What do I put in the greeting if there's no name?

“Dear Hiring Manager” or “Dear Hiring Committee”. USC's career center suggests these instead of “To Whom It May Concern”.

Can I use AI to write my cover letter?

Unless the employer says otherwise, yes, as long as every fact in it is yours and true. Give it your real results, then edit the draft until it sounds like you, because you'll have to talk about all of it in the interview.

Will it make up achievements?

It's built not to. It uses only the information you give it and leaves placeholders like [X%] or [N people] where a number is missing.

Can I write a cover letter with no work experience?

Yes. Use an internship, a class project, a club or a part-time job, and pick the two results that best match what the posting asks for.

Can I try it for free?

Yes. You can try 2 drafts a day on the homepage without an account. Saving drafts and writing in your own voice need a plan; Pro is $3 for the first month.
