I need an essay with APA citations from my own sources, and no made-up references.
List your sources with author, year, title and the notes or quotes you'll use. HidenGPT's essay format cites only those works, in APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago (author-date) or Harvard, and a citation it can't match to your list becomes a [source] placeholder instead of a made-up reference. You still check page numbers and formatting against your style guide.

Essay & Assignment: A clear thesis, well-built paragraphs and citations only from sources you give.
Why chatbots invent references
A language model writes what text usually looks like. A reference usually looks like an author, a year, a title and a journal, so when a model is asked for one without the source in front of it, it can produce something with the right shape that doesn't exist: a real author paired with a paper they never wrote, a plausible journal with the wrong year, a DOI that leads nowhere.
That's why any reference list from a chatbot needs every entry checked. The safer setup is to start from sources you have actually read and let the writer cite only those.
How HidenGPT handles citations
The Essay format may cite only works you list under Sources & notes. After drafting, each in-text citation's author is checked against your list. A citation it can't match is replaced with a [source] placeholder, and if you gave no sources, no reference list is kept, even if one was written.
Pick the style under Citations: APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago (author-date) or Harvard. In-text citations look roughly like (Wardle, 2019) in APA, (Wardle 12) in MLA, (Wardle 2019, 12) in Chicago author-date and (Wardle 2019) or (Wardle, 2019) in Harvard, depending on your school's version. The red pen runs on Light and leaves citations, [source] placeholders and the reference list exactly as written.
What to paste as sources
For each source, give the author or authors, the year, the title, the publisher or journal (with volume, issue and pages for articles) and a URL or DOI if there is one. Under each, add the notes or quotes you plan to use, with page numbers.
The notes matter more than the citation line. The writer sticks to what you paste, so a quote with its page number lets it cite precisely, while a title alone gives it nothing to say about the source.
List only sources you've read, or at least the parts you cite. A [source] placeholder in the draft is a signal to find support for that claim or to cut it.
Not the right tool if
- Finding sources. It works only from the sources you give it, so do your reading first.
- Footnote styles such as Chicago notes and bibliography. Chicago is supported in author-date form only.
- Assignments where AI drafting isn't allowed. Use it to outline or to study the structure, not for the essay you submit.
Other ways to do it
- Zotero (free) or another reference manager
- Stores your sources and formats citations and bibliographies in many styles.
- Your library's citation guide or a librarian
- Exact rules for your school's version of a style, plus help finding sources.
- Purdue OWL
- Free, widely used guides to APA and MLA formatting.
Questions
Is there an AI essay writer with real citations?
Yes, if you give it the sources. HidenGPT cites only works you list, in APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago (author-date) or Harvard, and replaces any citation it can't match with a [source] placeholder.
Why does ChatGPT make up references?
Because it writes what a reference usually looks like, not what exists. Without the source in front of it, a model can produce a believable author, year and title that don't match a real work, so check every entry.
Can it do Harvard referencing?
Yes. Harvard is one of four styles, alongside APA 7, MLA 9 and Chicago (author-date); pick it under Citations and list your sources.
What is a [source] placeholder?
A marker where a claim needs evidence you didn't provide. Add a source you've read that supports the claim, or soften or cut the claim.
Will it find sources for me?
No. It works only from the sources you paste, which is what keeps it from inventing references; your library database or Google Scholar is where to find them.
Do I still need to check the citations?
Yes. The automatic check matches authors against your list, so confirm years, page numbers and the formatting of each reference against your style guide.
What should I include for each source?
Author, year, title, publisher or journal and a URL or DOI, plus the notes or quotes you'll use with page numbers. The more of the source's content you paste, the more precisely it can cite.
