My best friend is getting married, and I'm giving a speech in front of people I've never met.

Bring your friend's name, the partner's name, how you met and two stories that show who your friend is now. HidenGPT's Speech format turns 4 minutes into about 520 words for the ear: who you are, your stories, the couple, a toast. It never fills a gap with a made-up memory.

Use it for

How to do it in HidenGPT

  1. 01

Write one sentence that tells a room of strangers who you are: how and when you met your friend, in plain words.

  2. 02

Choose two stories: one that makes people laugh and one that shows what kind of friend they are, then add one true thing about the partner.

  3. 03

With Speech picked under “Use it for”, set Occasion to Best man / maid of honor, Minutes to 4 and Your role to something like “the bride's college roommate and maid of honor”, then type your stories and send.

  4. 04

Strike every detail that did not happen, replace each [add a short memory] with something real and translate any group-chat joke into words the grandparents will follow.

  5. 05

Practice it aloud with a timer, then read it to one mutual friend and ask which line they would cut.

Speech & Toast: Weddings, graduations, keynotes: timed to the minute and written to be read aloud.

What changes when it is your best friend, not your brother or sister

A sibling is introduced by the family before they open their mouth. A best friend is not. Half the room knows your friend from work, from their partner's side or from a childhood you were not part of, and many will not know who you are. So spend your first two sentences on it: “I'm Maya. Jess and I met in a college dorm in 2012, and I have been her emergency contact ever since.”

Your stories also come from a narrower slice of life, usually a school, a team, a job or a city. That is useful. You can show the room a side of your friend their family has only heard about. It is also the trap: the best friend stories are often from nights out, and those belong in the group chat.

A simple test for each story: would it make sense, and still be kind, if their new mother-in-law heard it first? If it needs three people in the room to explain it, it is an inside joke. Tell it at the after-party instead.

Bridging from your friendship to the couple

Every good friend speech turns at the same point: from “who my friend is” to “who they are together”. Make the turn on a detail you saw yourself. When did you first hear the partner's name? What did your friend say, and how did they say it? What changed in them after?

If you introduced them, keep that to one line; the speech is not about your matchmaking. If you are close to both of them, say so early and give the partner one story of their own. If you barely know the partner, be honest and specific: “I have only met Daniel four times, and he has asked me a real question every single time.”

Then the toast. Ask people to raise their glasses, say one plain wish, and say both names.

Example: the turn and the toast, from a maid of honor

Example (the last part of a four-minute speech, about 180 words, from the notes in the box above):

“Every September, Jess and I go hiking for a weekend. No phones, no plans, just a trail and too many snacks. Three years ago, about a mile in, she said, ‘So I met someone.’ Six miles later she was still talking. I learned that Daniel reads the end of a book first, that he makes his own bread, and that he had called her the night before just to ask how her presentation went. I had never heard her talk about anyone for six miles. I didn't need to meet him after that. I already knew.

Daniel, you have met the woman who knocked on my door at two in the morning holding a smoking toaster, and the woman who flew to Denver to sit with me in a hospital waiting room. They are the same person. You are a lucky man, and I think you know it.

So please raise your glasses. To Jess and Daniel: may you always have a trail to walk and someone who wants to hear the whole story.

To Jess and Daniel.”

Before this part come the introduction and the two stories; after it, sit down.

What the Speech format does with your notes

On the Best man / maid of honor setting, the draft opens with who you are and how you know your friend, tells one or two stories that are funny but kind, turns to the couple and ends with a toast. Exes, money and fights stay out. Minutes runs from 1 to 15; at 4 the target is about 520 words, and you see a warning if the draft lands more than 30% off. The same setting works if you are not the best man or maid of honor at all, just the friend asked to say a few words: put that in Your role.

It is told to explain inside jokes just enough or drop them, and not to invent anecdotes, names or events. Where it needs more, it writes [add a short memory]. A light red pen pass catches stock phrases. On Pro or Pro Max, a voice saved from two to five pieces of your own writing (300 characters at least) makes the draft sound more like you; long messages you have sent your friend over the years work well as samples.

Not the right tool if

  • A roast for the bachelor or bachelorette party. This setting keeps the teasing kind and leaves out exes and nights out.
  • Stories you were not there for. It will not invent them; ask a mutual friend, or fill the placeholder yourself.
  • A speech for a brother or sister. The family angle is different, and those have their own pages.

Other ways to do it

Writing it yourself
Costs nothing. Introduction, two stories, the turn to the couple and a toast is all the structure you need.
Your friend group
Someone who was there can confirm the details of a story and tell you which ones work outside the group.
Speech services built for weddings
Sites such as ToastWiz or The Better Best Man ask you questions and write a draft for a fee; check their pages for current prices.
ChatGPT or another chatbot
Fast, but you will need to catch the stock wording and any detail it added that never happened.

Questions

How long should a speech for my best friend's wedding be?

Three to five minutes, with four a safe target. At about 130 words a minute, four minutes is roughly 520 words. If you are not in the wedding party and just saying a few words, one to two minutes is plenty.

How do I start a speech when nobody knows me?

Say your name and how you met your friend in one concrete sentence. “I'm Maya; Jess and I met in a college dorm in 2012” tells the room everything it needs.

What stories should I tell about my best friend?

One that is funny and kind, and one that shows what kind of friend they are. Leave out nights out, exes and anything that needs an inside joke to make sense.

What if I don't know their partner well?

Say one honest, specific thing you have noticed, then talk about what changed in your friend since they met. That is often more convincing than praise.

Can I give a short toast instead of a full speech?

Yes. Set Minutes to 1 and you get about 130 words: who you are, one line about your friend, one about the couple, and the toast.

Is it okay to use AI for a best friend wedding speech?

Yes, if the stories are yours. It drafts from what you type; you fix what is wrong, put it in your own words and give it as your speech. The friendship is the part no tool can supply.

Can I try it before I subscribe?

Yes. Visitors get 2 drafts a day on the homepage without an account. Saving drafts and writing in your own voice need a plan; Pro starts at $3 for the first month.
