What can I use instead of QuillBot to reword my writing?
Updated · 9 min read · by the HidenGPT team
Pick the alternative by the job you used QuillBot for. To reword sentences inside the apps you already write in, look at Grammarly, Wordtune or LanguageTool. For reports on a whole draft, ProWritingAid. If you already pay for Microsoft 365, Copilot in Word rewrites a selected passage. To set your own rewriting rules, ChatGPT or Claude. To see what was cut and a score before and after, HidenGPT, which we make.
Every tool here rewords text you give it. None of them makes paraphrased ideas your own, so you still cite the source, and none can promise what an AI detector will say.
Disclosure: we make HidenGPT, one of the tools below. The facts for every tool come from its own website, read on October 15, 2026, with links; we didn't blind-test them. If something has changed, tell us through the contact page.
| Your reason | What QuillBot's pages say | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| The 100-word cap on the $0 plan | Free paraphrases up to 100 words in 2 modes, Standard and Fluency | Grammarly's paraphraser lists no word cap on its page; ChatGPT and Claude have $0 plans |
| You want suggestions where you type | Extensions for Chrome, Edge and Safari, a Word add-in, a macOS app and phone keyboards | Grammarly and LanguageTool both run in browser add-ons; Copilot sits inside Word |
| You want feedback on a long draft, not one sentence | The paraphraser works on the passage you paste | ProWritingAid, with 25+ writing reports on Premium |
| You want to write your own rules | 9 built-in modes on Premium, plus custom modes | ChatGPT or Claude, with your instructions and a sample of your writing |
| You want to see what changed and why | You get the reworded passage and can compare modes | HidenGPT crosses out the stock phrases it cut and scores the text before and after |
| You write in another language | Its plan table lists paraphrasing in 23 languages | LanguageTool paraphrases in 6 languages; Wordtune writes only in English |

06ChatGPT
OpenAI's general chatbot. You paste a passage and tell it how to reword it.

- Rewrites with rules no preset mode has: keep every technical term, write at a set reading level, match a paragraph you paste as a sample. Text chats are unlimited on the $0 plan, within OpenAI's abuse guardrails.
- Limits
- Free has limited uploads, memory and context. There are no modes, synonym slider or list of changes, so you compare the versions yourself and check that no fact moved.
- Price
- Free: $0/month. Plus: $20/month. Go and Pro: see their pricing page.

07HidenGPTours
An AI ghostwriter for 17 formats whose Rewrite tool edits a draft you paste in.
- Good for
- Seeing the edit, not only the result. Rewrite can humanize, simplify, shorten to about half, expand, change the tone, fix spelling and grammar, or translate. It keeps names, numbers and facts, and shows what the red pen crossed out with a 0-100 naturalness score before and after. Voices built from 2-5 samples of your writing are saved on a plan.
- Limits
- No free plan; the homepage allows 2 trial drafts a day without an account. Up to 20,000 characters per rewrite. No plagiarism checker and no browser extension: you paste text in and copy it out. The score is an editing score, not an AI detector.
- Price
- Pro: $19/month ($3 the first month). Pro Max: $29/month ($9 the first month). Yearly: $68.40 (Pro) or $104.40 (Pro Max).

What QuillBot itself offers, so you know what you're replacing
Before you switch, check that the reason is real. On QuillBot's own Premium page, the $0 plan paraphrases up to 100 words in two modes, Standard and Fluency, and humanizes up to 100 words with limited use. Premium removes the paraphrasing cap, adds 9 built-in modes and custom modes, and checks 25,000 words a month for plagiarism. The same comparison table lists paraphrasing in 23 languages and a setting for the number of synonyms.
Premium showed $4.17 a month billed annually when we checked. QuillBot's help center says the price depends on your region and on whether you pay monthly, quarterly or yearly, so your checkout may show a different number. If the word cap is your only complaint, compare that price with the alternatives below before you move your work.
Paraphrasing is not the same as making it yours
Every tool on this page changes the words. None changes whose idea it is. If the passage came from a book, an article or a classmate, a reworded version still needs a citation, and Grammarly's paraphraser page says the same about citing your sources.
A quick test for your own drafts: after rewording, can you point to one sentence that says something the source did not? If not, you have a paraphrase, which is fine with a citation, but not new writing. Our guide to paraphrasing without plagiarizing walks through quoting, paraphrasing and summarizing with examples.
A 10-minute test before you pay for anything
Take one paragraph of about 120 words that you wrote yourself and that contains a number and a name. Run it through QuillBot and two alternatives on the same setting, for example a formal or a shorter version. Treat the 10 minutes as a rule of thumb, not a measurement.
Score each result on three questions. Did the number or the name change? Did the meaning shift anywhere? How many sentences would you still rewrite by hand? A tool that keeps your facts and leaves you one or two sentences to fix suits the way you write. If all three garble the facts, the paragraph probably needs splitting into shorter sentences before any tool touches it.
Where HidenGPT is weaker than QuillBot
We make HidenGPT, so here is where it loses. QuillBot has a $0 plan, a synonym slider, a plagiarism checker, a citation generator and extensions for browsers, Word and phone keyboards. HidenGPT has none of those: there is a 2-draft daily trial on the homepage, and you paste text into the composer and copy the result out.
Where it differs: one Rewrite action can also shorten, change the tone or translate, and the red pen shows the phrases it cut with a score before and after. It has a stock-phrase list for each of its ten writing languages.
How we checked
We read each vendor's own pricing, feature and help pages on 15 October 2026 and linked them under each entry. QuillBot's pages blocked our first, automated request, so we read them in a regular browser. We did not run a blind test of output quality, and the order is not a ranking.
Prices are in US dollars and several vendors say theirs vary by region. Where a page didn't load or didn't say, we tell you so. If something has changed, tell us through the contact page.
Common mistakes
- Switching for the word cap alone: compare QuillBot Premium's price in your region with the alternative's first.
- Testing on a paragraph with no facts in it: use one with a number and a name, so you can see which tool changes them.
- Dropping the citation after rewording: a paraphrase of someone else's idea still needs its source.
- Running the whole document at once: rewrite one paragraph at a time and read each one before moving on.
- Choosing a tool to change an AI detector's score: none of these tools is built for that, and none can promise it.
Questions
What is the closest alternative to QuillBot?
For sentence-level rewording with modes, Grammarly's paraphrasing tool and Wordtune work most like QuillBot. Grammarly has six preset styles and a custom voice; Wordtune offers alternative versions of each sentence in English. LanguageTool is closest if you need several languages.
Is there a QuillBot alternative with a $0 plan?
Yes, most of them. Grammarly, Wordtune, LanguageTool, ProWritingAid, ChatGPT and Claude all list a $0 plan with limits, such as LanguageTool's 3 paraphrases a day or Wordtune's 10 rewrites a day. Copilot in Word needs a paid Microsoft 365 plan, and HidenGPT has no free plan, just 2 trial drafts a day.
Is ChatGPT better than QuillBot for paraphrasing?
It depends on how much control you want. ChatGPT follows any instruction you write, which helps with odd requirements, but it has no modes or synonym slider and gives you no list of what changed. QuillBot is quicker for one sentence at a time.
Is it plagiarism to use a paraphrasing tool?
Rewording someone else's work without citing it is plagiarism, whichever tool does the rewording. Cite the source, and follow your school's or employer's rules on AI tools. For your own writing, rewording is ordinary editing.
Will a QuillBot alternative get past AI detectors?
No tool can promise that, and none of the ones listed here is sold for it. Detectors can flag writing a person did alone and miss text a model wrote, so a score on one tells you little about the next. If a class or client bans AI, rewording AI text does not change the rule.
Which alternative works in Google Docs or Word?
ProWritingAid lists both Word and Google Docs. Copilot works inside Word for Microsoft 365. Grammarly links apps for Microsoft Office and Google Docs, and LanguageTool works through browser add-ons.
How much does QuillBot Premium cost?
QuillBot says the price depends on your region and billing period. Its Premium page showed $4.17 a month billed annually when we checked on 15 October 2026, with monthly and quarterly plans also offered.
